Behind the Lens

Carrying the Legacy Forward

Photography has been a constant presence throughout my life. It’s wild how many people in my family were either taking photos, commissioning them, or mastering the craft for fun. My great-great-grandparents were early adopters, sitting for photos in the 1890s. In the 1910s, my great-grandmother appeared in surprisingly of-this-era beach portraits with her young family of five. A few decades later, my grandfather married a photographer and studio owner. By the time I showed up, my parents were documenting our travel-happy childhood in black and white. I realize now that the photos in our family albums weren’t pop-up-flash snapshots or run-of-mill portraits, they were art.

High school photography class transformed me from casual observer to inspired creator. I shot in black and white, processing my own film and prints. Frustrated that I couldn't access the darkroom at all hours, I set up a makeshift lab in a bathroom, taping the doors shut and hanging wet photos under the glow of a red light. There is nothing like watching an image fade into existence on blank white paper as it floats in a chemical bath.

These days I shoot digital, though I still have most of my old gear. And while digital is convenient, I sometimes miss that feeling of awe when I'd take a deep breath, hit the lights, and finally witness the result of a creative journey I was part of but couldn’t truly see until that moment.

I’ve been part of this art form as a consumer and creator my whole life and career. I’d love to help shape your relationship with photography so you can inspire current and future generations as my family has inspired me.
